Bamboo Flooring in the Bathroom – Is it a Good Idea?



There are mixed opinions about using bamboo flooring in a bathroom. Bathrooms are high traffic areas and require frequent cleaning. Moisture is more in a bathroom than in any other rooms in a building. Therefore bamboo that can not withstand moisture are not suitable in a bathroom. When looking at the cost and ease of installation, bamboo flooring is much cheaper than any other flooring material in a bathroom.

It is very important to keep a very slight tilt towards the drain when using bamboo flooring in a bathroom. The tongue and groove installation method is easy to carry out. The bamboo flooring should be from a manufacturer who gives warranty if installed in a bathroom.

Bamboo is usually moisture resistant. Before going to install bamboo flooring in a bathroom all precautions should be taken for a safe installation. The terms and conditions of the manufacturer should be adhered strictly as some manufactures do not provide warranty if installed in a bathroom.

Prior to bamboo installation in a bathroom, the sub floor should be ensured clean, dry and leveled. The sub floors will not bond well with the adhesive if it is not dirt free. The level of the floor should ensure flow of water towards the drain. The floorings should be checked for any damages.

The flooring should be acclimated before installation. Always check with the manufacture’s guidelines with respect to acclimation. The bamboo can be coated with moisture resistant urethane to resist water.

After installation the flooring should be cleaned with frequent dusting and sweeping. The use of wood cleaner is recommended but never uses detergents or wax to clean bamboo in a bathroom.

Bamboo floorings if properly cared is best and cheap option for bathrooms. The diversified designs and textures make it a better option than any other flooring choices.
